Dear Editor,
For years serving members of the Guyana Police Force have been accused of committing acts that are totally opposed to their “to serve and protect” purpose.
The recent sodomy, physical abuse, and alleged wrongful detention of Laing Avenue resident Colwyn Harding is now added to the list.
The Alliance For Change (AFC), in its release, named the Constable being the prime enforcer of this brutal, inhumane and most embarrassing act committed on Mr Harding. Another police Constable and an Inspector are named by the AFC as being present or being participants of this horrid assault on a civilian.
Commissioner Leroy Brumell, soon after his confirmation in his current position some months ago, can be credited for some pluses. These include the hunting down of criminals who created havoc on the island of Wakenaam and the West Coast Demerara area, some weeks prior to the Commissioner’s confirmation.
The police have also ensured a reasonably peaceful Christmas season, and though unnatural deaths continue in the New Year, Mr Brumell’s no nonsense approach to handling these and other matters will be relied upon.
It is here that I implore on Mr Brumell, that he takes action into his own hands as head of the GPF and ensure that the three officers named in the horrid act meted out to Mr Harding, face the full extent of the law. It is with utmost disbelief that an Inspector would look on as junior ranks carry out such a power drunk act on another human being. This police Inspector should be demoted, at the least, from his position.
We remember too well the treatment meted out to a teenager by ranks at the Leonora Police Station. These and other unlawful acts by serving police officers will remain in the bad books of the GPF.
It is here that I call on Mr Brumell to show his true salts as that Police Commissioner I admire, and deal with this matter accordingly, in the most expeditious manner.
I therefore suggest that the named ranks be placed before the courts and face the embarrassment of having their pictures splashed across the Kaieteur News, Stabroek News and other media outlets, since they too should go down in the criminal books of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Paulette Harvey
