Regulators of the telephone industry have approved reduced international rates to Canada and the United States.
According to an advisory of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the promotion on the outbound international calls, excluding calls to Alaska and Hawaii, are at the approved pre-tax rate of $20 per minute (peak) and $12 per minute (off peak).
The rates were made effective from Sunday last and will run to March 31, 2014.
PUC has approved calls rates to the US and Canada that could see customers paying as low as $12 per minute.
The promotion, PUC said, is applicable to all Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) and Digicel customers and is offered on both landline and mobile services, free of any subscription or fixed charges.
According to PUC, with the applicable taxes, the rates will be $23.2 (peak) and $13.92 (off –peak).
The advisory noted that the peak period is from 6am – 6pm, during the weekdays, while the off peak period is from 6pm to 6am. Weekends and holidays are considered off peak, the body said.
