GPHC gets US$10,000 equipment for urology clinic
“Some of the medical equipment the doctors use at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) need upgrading; some just aren’t very good,” is the opinion of Dr. Winston McGill.
Dr. McGill, a member of the visiting Caribbean Medical Mission and an Urologist, did not hesitate to offer his opinion, Tuesday, at a handing over ceremony at the hospital’s Eye Clinic.

Recognizing that there is an urgent need for basic equipment in the Urology Clinic, the team of professionals handed over resectoscopes worth over US$10,000 to the health institution.
Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs.
The organs under the domain of urology include the kidney, adrenal glands, ureters, bladder, urethra and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis).
Resectoscope is a surgical instrument used to remove tissue from the uterus, prostate, bladder, or urethra. It is a type of instrument that combines a camera and instrumentation so doctors can view a surgical site and perform surgery through the same incision.
According to McGill, there is some equipment at the hospital which need to be upgraded urgently.
He said that his team will be seeking assistance from the suppliers of the medical instrument in the United States of America to assist the GPHC.
Receiving the resectoscopes on behalf of the hospital was Dr. Chris Prashad, an Urologist at the health institution.
“Urology basically signifies tremendous burden in Guyana in terms of the disease. We have one of the largest clinics at GPHC and we continue to see a lot of patients during the week for that reason. We are always appreciative for whatever support can be given to us and in this case Dr. McGill and his team have assisted us,” Dr. Prashad stressed.
He added, “We are not unfamiliar with this equipment we do have them and we do use them a lot, however as you know endoscopic equipment has a lifespan and ours are quite dated so we are thankful for this donation.”
Chief Executive officer of the hospital, Michael Khan thanked the team of professionals for making such a timely donation.
