Dear Editor,
In response to a letter headed “Worrying Incidents at the Bartica Magistrate’s court” in Kaieteur News dated Sunday, December 1, 2013.
The letter writer spoke about the treatment meted out to the mother of the deceased and the privileges granted to the accused but I would like to inform the letter writer that in all courts everybody is subjected to turn off their phone or to put it on silent when in and around the court building. The mother of the deceased should have taken her phone off or go on the road to take her call.
The accused are not granted any special treatment because they are rich as claimed by the letter writer. Prisoners are allowed to speak to their relatives for a short period of time.
What I would like to mention is that the letter writer did not find worrying when one of the witnesses was in the witness box his relatives were in the courtroom and making signs to him. They were shaking their head to him for him to answer in the affirmative or the negative. This is totally wrong.
I ask that the commissioner ask his ranks to look carefully at people attending court who are bent on speaking to witnesses and hampering evidence. Concerned citizen.
