Five percent increase…. GPHC nurses keep up the pressure

Nurses at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday continued their protest to register disapproval with government’s decision to give public servants a five percent pay hike for this year.
The GPHC nurses started their protest last Friday, two days after Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon announced that public servants will get a five percent increase in their salary for this year. The health care workers yesterday claimed, “It is illegal for the government to give us a five percent increase. We can only use that to buy bread, nothing else.”
The nurses who stood quietly in front the Accident and Emergency’s compound of the GPHC are calling on President, Donald Ramotar to “soften your heart and think about your people. We selected you to be our leader for a reason. Please don’t look at us suffering and do nothing.”
Kempton Alexander, nurses’ representatives on the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) said that tomorrow (Thursday) there will be a meeting with all the hospital’s staffers at the health institution and it will be decided whether they will go “full-out” with their protest.
“We will decide the way forward from that meeting. What is going on is illegal and we want the government to meet with our union,” Alexander asserted.
Some of the placards read, “Five percent – a total eye pass”, “We need 25% increase on our salaries”, “Ramotar please stop throwing away billions of money on drugs. Give us a penny now to feed our children. No hungry children for Christmas”, “No imposition anymore.”
The protest will go on everyday in front the GPHC’s compound between 12:00-13:00hrs.
