Bajan man remanded for robbing Guyanese

Knowledge by some persons in a St. Michael, Barbados, community that a Guyanese businessman, Mahendra Ramautar, kept money and valuables in his home led to him being robbed and to suffer a gunshot wound.
Now one of the thieves in that 2010 crime has confessed, and was on Friday remanded to the Barbados Her Majesty’s Prison, Dodds, awaiting a pre-sentencing report from social services agencies because he also admitted to being a drug addict.
According to media reports, the court heard that the repeat offender and self-confessed burglar, Derrick Ward, got involved in the robbery together with two other men after one of them said he “know a Guyanese man that is got gold”.
“He tell me he gun carry me to rob (Ramautar),” Ward related in a confession statement.
Court evidence indicated that the conversation between Ward and his accomplices occurred on the day after Ramautar had returned from work and hid his money behind a wardrobe.
The bandits drove to Ramautar’s home in Eagle Hall, where, according to Ward, one of the men approached the door and “holler police, police”.
Ramautar said the bandits, who had forced their way into his house after he opened the door to shouts of ‘police’, robbed him of $5,000 cash, one chain, five rings, five bracelets and a cell phone. In the process one of the men accompanying Ward shot Ramautar in the leg.
“He had a gun and he tell the man to pass the gold,” Ward continued. “The man give me the jewelry and I ran out the house and get in the car. Before I ran out I hear the gun went off”.
In their subsequent investigations, police held Ward, but his accomplices were never arrested.
Ward has seven previous convictions, one each for using indecent language, resisting arrest, assault, wounding and three for robbery.
