Remembrance Day observances were not only held in the city as the ceremonious parade and laying of wreaths also took place in New Amsterdam and in the Esplanade Recreational Gardens in the town. Leading the parade yesterday were the ranks of the joint services, who, along with their colleagues, marched through Main Street into the Esplanade Gardens. Nurse-trainees from the N/A School of Nursing were also part of the march and day’s proceedings.
Present at the formal programme and among those laying the wreaths at the monument site in the Gardens were the various senior ranks of the Joint Services, including Commander of ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commander Brian Joseph; Fire Chief ‘B’ Division, Mr. Compton Sparman; Regional Chairman of Region 6 and Vice-Chairman, Mr. David Armogan and Mr. Bhupaul Jhagroo respectively; Members of Parliament, Mr. Faizal M. Jaffarally and Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo; Regional Executive and Deputy- Regional Executive Officers respectively, Mr. Paul Ramrattan and Mr. Imran Ally; Religious leaders; Mayor and Deputy- Mayor of New Amsterdam, Mr. Claude Henry and Mr. Harold Dabydeen; representatives of the Guyana Legion; N/A Town Constabulary; and Regional Education Officer of Region 6 Ms. Volika Jaikishun.
The Guyana Police Force band played beautiful renditions throughout the entire proceedings. Mr. David Armogan, in delivering the main remarks said that our world today is still one in which wars and conflicts are predominantly present.
“The world is still characterized by conflicts and wars. People are still dying in their numbers, in their quest for freedom and social justice. And so, on this occasion, of Remembrance Day, we the citizens of the Republic of Guyana, re- dedicate ourselves to the search for peace and renew our commitments to the development and well-being of our beloved country. May God bless Guyana and may we continue to enjoy the dignity and social progress we are making in Guyana.”
The programme ended with the singing of the hymn ‘Oh God, Our Help in Ages Past’ by Mrs. Gloria Beharry and the National Anthem, led by Mr. Imran Ally.
