The Women’s Progressive Organisation regrets the recent passing of one its founding members, Ms. Jessica Huntley.
We acknowledge the valuable contributions that she made in the early stages of the organisation’s formation and development.
The comments made by Jessica Huntley who was named provisional secretary at the formation of the WPO on May 27th 1953 still resonate with us when she said “”the WPO stands for a better educated woman who can bring up children in surrounding of security; it stands for peace and friendship among the people of the world and for ultimate liberation of our women from colonialism and poverty.”
We have seen her prophetic words becoming a reality especially when we see the way women in Guyana have grown in all areas of the country’s development. Her call along with Cde Janet Jagan for women to send their girls to school has become a success story.
The WPO expresses its sincere condolences to her husband Eric and other relatives and friends of Ms Huntley.
