Police are trying to locate a freed murder accused who was sitting with businesswoman Shelliza Basir-Lall when she was shot and killed and who only escaped a similar fate because one of the gunmen’s weapons jammed.
The man is a Pomeroon resident who was implicated in the suspected drug-related murders in 2009 of a father and son. The ‘person of interest’ and others were charged, but subsequently acquitted, for the March 2009 murder of Romeo De Agrella and his son, Clint De Agrella, whose bullet-riddled bodies were found at Iron Punt, North West District.
Police have been told that the man and his spouse were sitting with Mrs. Basir-Lall, her husband Raymond Lall and others in Mambo’s Beer Garden when two gunmen entered.
One of the gunmen reportedly pointed his weapon at the former murder accused and attempted to shoot, but the weapon ‘snapped’, a senior police official told Kaieteur News.
The ‘back-up’ gunman then opened fire, riddling Mrs. Basir-Lall and wounding her husband and two of the couple’s employees.
Reports indicate that the survivor and his spouse have gone into hiding. “We are trying to question a person of interest,” the official said.
Like the murder of the De Agrellas, police also believe that Sunday’s attack was drug-related. Investigators yesterday continued to question a 19-year-old Sophia resident who was nabbed with a submachine gun and ten nine millimeter rounds, shortly after Mrs. Basir-Lall was slain. However, police are still to conduct ballistic tests to ascertain whether the same weapon was used at the Kitty beer garden.
Investigators who visited the scene of the attack also recovered 14 spent shells along with 11 warheads which could have been used in a 9mm sub-machine gun.
Shelliza Basir-Lall, also called Shelly Lall of Charity, Essequibo, was shot at least four times as she sat with her husband and about six other people at a table. She died while receiving treatment at the Balwant Singh Hospital.
Her husband, Raymond Lall, 36, who runs a trucking company and operates a speedboat service, was shot five times. He underwent surgery at a private hospital in the city. Sources said that he was shot in the leg and his injuries are not life threatening.
Two of Lall’s employees were also injured. They were identified as Parmanad Persaud of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and Babatunde Nedd of Parika, West Coast Demerara, who is said to be in a critical condition.
An eyewitness recalled seeing at least two gunmen enter the premises and head straight for the table where the couple and others were sitting.
After the gunfire ceased, the patron saw four persons lying on the floor. He said that the woman appeared to be motionless while her husband was moaning.
Kaieteur News was told that the couple would normally travel to Georgetown to conduct business. The relative explained that the two would spend about a day or less in Georgetown before travelling back to Essequibo.

It’s now time for us to reintroduce the death squad.
It’s now time for us to take the fight to these uncivilized scums
and have them looking over their shoulders, in fear and dread, not knowing when their lives will be ended.
Enough of having innocent people, going about their daily business, getting murdered.
It’s now time to get the DEATH SQUAD back in action.
I totally agree with …what we need is few people to do what we saw in the Death Wish Movies.
I so agree with you 1000% we need them back badly, back in the days they had Tooths, Doojai and a few others I cannot remember their names, they had a tall slim black girl with them she was bad. I think what they are claiming here there is more to this story than we are hearing. Too many rich folks in Gt and they never work ONE DAY IN THEIR LIFE, you need to investigate these folks but they are not .
It is sad that Mrs, Lall was shot , but this seem to be more than just a robbery , looks more like a hit.
We are on the same page, agree, agree, agree
GT is like a drug den, all you rich so called business people just have your business as a front.
1000% AGREEEEEEEEEEEEE
Guyana is way too small for all this foolishness and for a country which is so full of drugs , is only going to make it worse ..
keep ya heads up my fellow Guyanese ….
What is the Government doing about this?
