Oct 01, 2013 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
I was just preparing my letter, and copy of my receipt as proof of payment for my 2013 Tax Practice Certificate, when I read in today’s newspapers the apology from the Guyana Revenue Authority [GRA].
Reading this apology felt once again like the abuse of power – Heh tek dis. This is my conclusion since the list of professionals licensed is provided for the official gazette by the GRA. And so the question is – how could this mistake have been made? What was the real reason for this publication compared to a deadline that was earlier this year, and the fact that GRA is not shy to write you about monies owed!
It is insufficient and an absence of moral standing for the GRA to just list scores of other popular names, then state – among others, who are these others? Then, they proceeded with what felt like the suggestion . . . that your readers check the official gazette. In the same manner as the inaccurate list was submitted to your newspapers, and to which you gave prominence, not only as front page headlines, but in your musings – Dem Boys Seh – likewise should there be a class-apology with similar prominence! What was written in yesterday’s (Sunday’s) Kaieteur News had a clear intent to embarrass professionals, and to allow the public to – wash dem mouth pon we . . . hence who was benefitting?
I wish to end this letter with this quote provided by a friend: “Whether it’s Rosa Parks on a bus or a striking worker on a picket line, the moments that have given birth to the greatest progress are when people found the inner courage and peace to look power in the eye and say, ‘no.’” [Chris Hayes, MSNBC Host].
Power does expire.
