A man went berserk on Saturday and is now on the run after he set fire to his two-storey wood and concrete house at, Lot 45 Adelphi New Area, East Canje, Berbice, leaving his wife and five-year-old daughter homeless.
Lakeram Bharrat, 49, a heavy duty operator in the Interior and his common law wife, Devika Deolall, 32, are before the court in an ongoing domestic dispute. They were scheduled to return to court
on Wednesday.
According to information the man who is a habitual drinker recently returned home from the Interior. On Saturday he invited some friends over and during the height of the spree, he and his wife became involved in another argument. He was told that his wife has been unfaithful to him.
Around 16:30hrs the misunderstanding escalated and the woman was assaulted. She left to report the matter at the Reliance Police Station. On her way back with the Police she was told that her house was on fire. An alarm was raised. Neighbours formed a bucket brigade and managed to contain the fire to the inside of the house. The lower flat housed the washroom, kitchen, dining and living rooms.
Clothing, a motorcycle CG 4229 which was allegedly pushed into the house and the fuel drained to start the fire, a washing machine, lap top computer and other household articles were among the items destroyed.
Neighbours reported seeing the man jumping a drain, crossing a trench and heading to the canefields where he made good his escape.
The police went in search of the man, but he could not be located. He has not been
seen since.
Investigations are continuing.
