Dear Editor,
By Order 23 of 2012, dated May 4, 201 2 and signed by the Hon Minister of Labour Nanda Gopaul, government has increased the minimum wages / salaries for security guards from one hundred dollars per hour to one hundred and forty dollars per hour effective from the 1st of June 2012,
When Tenders were out for security companies to apply for contracts to provide security service in the ten administrative Regions of Guyana for the year March 1, 201 3 to 28th of February 2014, it was clearly stated, “Duly note that the new minimum wages for security guards is now $ 140. per hour…”
Again in May 2013, a new order was published sand igned again by the said Minister of Labour, Hon Nanda Gopaul, whereby the new National Minimum wage was passed and that security guards are to receive the sum of two hundred and two dollars per hour effective July 1, 2013.
Lo and behold, we the security guards working at a particular institution are still being paid one hundred and twenty dollars per hour and nothing is being done by the Minister or any government officials to correct this malpractice,
We feel strongly that some big ones are receiving a hefty sum this firm and so all are turning a blind eye to our plight, despite several letters of complaint in the newspapers.
Hoping some action will be taken so that we can receive what we work for.
Thank you. Security guard
