Teams battle for semi final spots; women segment gets underway
When the action in the Slingerz Football Club/National Association of Women’s Football Goal for Gold football championships continues tonight at the GFC Ground, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will take on Camptown FC in a win that propels the winner into the finals, while the women’s segment of the championships commences with a riveting match between West Demerara and Bartica.
The organizers have intimated that they are working in tandem with the executive of the National Association of Women’s Football (NAWF) to promote the sport in that sector. Hence, they anticipate fierce action as the women attempt to establish themselves as strong forces. They will battle for a top prize of $200,000 with the second place team carrying home half that amount. The third and fourth place finishers will win $50,000 and $25,000 respectively.

Meanwhile, a helmet trick of goals by Devon Millington earned Slingerz FC a 4-1 victory over Topp XX when those two teams clashed at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground Friday evening last. The dapper striker scored in the 19th, 25th, 39th and 82ndminutes after Colwyn David had sent the losing team one up in the 5thminute. It proved to be the lone success for the Topp XX squad.
Camptown and Riddim Squad then battled to a 1 all stalemate in regulation time with goals off the boot of Shem Porter (9th) for the former team and Sheldon Hope in 54thminute for the latter. The game was eventually decided on penalty kicks after extra time failed to produce a winner; Camptown prevailed 4-2.
Slingerz FC will play Western Tigers on Wednesday in the other semi final affair with the winner facing off with the winner of tonight’s male encounter for championship honours. Georgetown and Berbice will lock horns on Wednesday evening to determine the other finalist in the women’s segment of the championships.
The tournament has benefited from the largesse of Ansa McAl, Star Party Rental and Eton Cordis of Money Gram, Alexander Street, Kitty. Tonight’s action gets underway at 18:00hrs sharp.
