Johnson satisfied with locals’ performance in CRTTF pre-Cadet C/ships

Head Coach of the Guyana team which competed in the recently concluded Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) pre-Cadet Championship Linden Johnson said he is satisfied with the overall showing of the team.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Johnson stated that while the competition was challenging he expected more gold medals from his charges.

He argued that the Guyanese made too many mistakes at crucial times. “Our players made too many mistakes which proved costly. The other countries came well prepared, they know that we are the defending champions and the strength of our players”, he added.
Guyanese Neveah Clarkston copped gold, Selinas Jackman grabbed silver and Abagail Martin took bronze in the singles while Clarkston and Jackman won the doubles in the Girls Under-11 category and Johnson commended the trio for their sterling performances.
“These players completely dominated their rivals and I am happy about it. Clarkston is a promising player and she peaked at the right time, Jackman and Martin are very good as well, so we definitely are not short of talent”, he said.
Johnson said the team’s preparation at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was somewhat affected and that the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) needs a facility. “We need a venue so that our training schedule and other programmes will not be affected by other sports. Some of our training sessions had to be called off due to this and the players were disappointed. We also need more support from the senior players and members of the GTTA executive when preparing teams,” stated Johnson.
The long serving coach believes the Tennis Academy, which according to Director of Sport Neil Kumar is in the making will benefit the game tremendously. He informed that they will be able to conduct more programmes and training sessions since it will not be affected by other sporting disciplines.
Meanwhile, the ‘Teach Them Young’ coaching programme will continue on Monday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 10:00hrs.
