Dear Editor,
As an individual that is in the Education system for the past sixteen years and being involved in the system, the teachers and the curriculum. I am appalled at decisions made within the Ministry.
It is shocking to know that the Government is paying advisors, yet there is no one to properly educate and advise the Minister of Education that the problem of students not performing in the subjects, English Language and Mathematics, is not lack of text books or geometry sets. The provision of these will not enhance performances of students.
It must be known that there are a lot of teachers within the system that are not knowledgeable of the syllabus content. Many of these subject teachers were not exposed to some of the content area in school ,were not able to grasped much of the content areas , are not involve in practice work for personal empowerment or even research are not done by many of these teachers in the respective subject areas in the system.
What should have happened is, some sort of diagnosis carried out through the form of an assessment administered to all teachers in these subject areas and are marked. From the assessment it can be known which areas are lacking. Using this by which teachers and sessions can be done at N.C.E.R.D by knowledgeable and competent persons in the topic areas during the August vacation to correct these inconsistencies.
I spoke to teachers teaching these subject areas and they said they are not knowledgeable of all the content or even 80 per cent of the syllabus so they do not teach those areas.
Students have text book and geometry instruments and are still performing poorly. Some teachers only know to do calculations using one method and if a student uses another method, it is considered incorrect. Concerned Personnel
