– Bancroft/Khan in action today
Local Middleweight amateur boxer, Dennis Thomas, was Guyana’s first casualty when he dropped a close points decision (28-29) to Venezuelan, Rafael Gonzalez when activities in the 41st Giraldo Cordova Cardin International Boxing Tournament got underway at the Havana’s Ramon Fonst Multi-Sports Hall, Havana Cuba, Wednesday afternoon last.
Garnering information from the Spanish speaking country is somewhat trying but Kaieteur Sports learned that Thomas was matched against a tough fighter. We were also informed that the Guyanese pugilist fought his heart out and received loud applause after the decision was announced.
Two other Guyanese boxers, Bantamweight, Imran Khan and Welterweight, Eon Bancroft, are scheduled to box sometime this afternoon. Khan will oppose a Cuban but we were not furnished with the name or nationality of Bancroft’s opponent.
The three boxers comprise those of a truncated team that travelled to Cuba to participate in the tournament in the Cuban capital. More than 100 boxers from 14 countries will be participating in the tournament which has been likened unto a Mini Olympic Games.
Several high profiled boxers are expected to compete at the tournament including Olympic and World bronze medalist, Vijender Kumar of India, European 2008 silver medalist Salomo Ntuve, of Sweden, Pan American champions Everton Lopez and Mike Carvalho, of Brazil, and also Pan American gold medalist Roberto Navarro, of the Dominican Republic.
Several other countries will vie for honours at the tournament including Australia, Argentina, Mozambique, Venezuela, Peru, the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, the Cayman Islands, Canada, Kazakhstan, China, Jordan, Algeria, Mongolia and Australia. Russia will send two teams to take part in the traditional tournament.
The Guyanese contingent was trimmed down after boxing administrators failed to procure adequate funding. Those boxers failing to make the grade are GDF representative, Welterweight Ron Smith, Light/Middleweight Bert Braithwaite and Lightweight, Clairmont Gibson, Featherweight, Delon Charles (FYF) and Lightweight, Stephon Gouviea (HE).
Commissioner of Police (Ag), Leroy Brummel, donated two airline tickets for Thomas and Khan while Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Products Ltd; Ramsay Ali contributed Bancroft’s airline ticket. Government’s contribution was a waiver of the airport taxes. The team is managed and coached by Terrence Poole with assistance from Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon.
