Prabhudyal ‘Ramesh’ Tarachand, 34, of High Reef, Albion Corentyne was remanded to prison yesterday after he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. Tarachand was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of murder which was read to him. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Mursaline Bacchus.
Tarachand was arrested last Sunday evening (June 2) after the gruesome discovery of his 28- year- old wife, Geeta Devi ‘Diane’ Bhishundial, who was strangled at their High Reef, Albion home.
Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff told the court that on the day in question around 21:00 hrs the couple was involved in a misunderstanding at their home during which time the woman was strangled.
The couple allegedly got into a misunderstanding following a triangular love affair involving Diane, Ramesh and another man. Her lifeless body was discovered on a bed in the living room. Prabhudyal after allegedly committing the act drank a quantity of paint ‘thinner’ and tried to hang himself using a cord. He was cut down and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital. The couple’s children, Nikhail, 7, Brianna, 3 and one-year-old Jaden are currently living with Diane’s parents.
Tarachand ingested paint ‘thinners’ and hung himself on the same evening, after an argument ensued involving his wife and another individual, Bryan Luke. Police released Luke late Monday.
Tarachand will make his next court appearance on June 18. The matter has been transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
Meanwhile, a few residents of High Reef, Albion, spoke with Kaieteur News yesterday and solicited financial assistance from other villagers to assist with the legal fees to fight Tarachand’s case in court. His brother, Muniram Tarachand, also blasted what he called “sloppy police investigations.”
“I can’t understand they are investigating a murder and they collect the three persons who were in the house—the sweet man, the wife and he, and just couple hours after they will release the sweet man—this is sloppy investigations and the police need to do a more thorough and in-depth investigation. We are not pleased with this—we don’t know—maybe somebody take bribe somewhere and this is why they are sinking my brother.”
Additionally, the villagers are accusing the suspect, who was released, of having several brushes with the law in the past.
“They are very convinced that Ramesh is not capable of doing something like this and this is why they have banded together….and they are garnering support—people starting to help them financially, because he is not financially able.”
One villager stated that the group collected $200,000 on Wednesday and an additional $70,000 yesterday. “Lots of people are cooperating with he, because everybody knows that he [Ramesh] is innocent—he loved Diane so much and we can’t believe that she died and how he ended up like this,” the villager added.
Another resident mentioned that the police did not penalize Luke for breaching the ban that was imposed upon him by the police at Albion in April after a major confrontation involving Diane, Ramesh and himself. “That man got ban to keep so much yards away from this woman and when the incident took place he was here and then he walked away free from the law!”
“That go to show somebody is collecting money somewhere—somebody taking a bribe—look how much crimes he committed and he ended up at the station…and the police know this….”, said Muniram.
“This investigation is bungled—something wrong somewhere. The Guyana Police Force is too slack and citizens and residents can never get justice in this country—especially poor people.”
“The present state of the police force and the way it is being run—money is law and money is justice; once you get money you get power—so equal rights and equal justice can’t be in this country.”
