– Edge underdogs Festival City with regulation goal
Without goal-scoring duo, Dennis Edwards and Devon Millington, who were both unavailable for the final, Sparta Boss became the official bosses of the Mackeson ‘Keep Your Five Alive’ Futsal football tournament, capping a dominant performance.

Mackeson Brand Coordinator, Jamaal Douglas (third, right) and Coordinator of the Mackeson ‘Keep Your Five Alive’ Futsal football tournament, Kevin Adonis joins Sparta Boss as they hoist the Championship trophy in celebration Saturday night.
Sparta Boss returned from a semifinal defeat to edge West Front Road 1-0 and take the top prize of $300,000 and Championship trophy when the curtains came down on the tournament Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall tarmac last Saturday night.
After West Front Road defeated Festival City 3-2 on penalty kicks, Sparta Boss suffered their first defeat of the tournament against Festival City, going down 2-3 via the penalty route, setting up a must-win final match against West Front Road.
Sparta Boss needed a win within regulation time to overturn their fortunes and give them the best aggregate in the tri-partite playoffs. Fans packed every square inch of the venue, even swarming a back staircase of the venue to witness an enthralling contest.
Stern defence from Sparta Bosses Jerome Weekes Hubert Pedro of West Front Road ensured that the first half ended nil-all. But as destiny would have it, Sheldon Shepherd received a through-ball from Jerome Richardson and loosed a magnificent shot that evaded the West Front Road keeper.
The goal sparked loud celebrations, especially from the North East-based supporters that backed Sparta Boss throughout a tournament they truly dominated. The Pedro siblings and Nathan Nagaloo tried desperately to find an equalizer, but Sparta Boss’s defence stood up to the onslaught for the impressive win without their two major players.
After some confusion as it relates to who won the tournament based on how the teams finished,
Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Referees Coordinator, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith called the three captains and tournament coordinator, Kevin Adonis and declared Sparta Boss the winner as they were the only team to score in regulation time.
Festival City was declared second because they did not concede any goal. In the first game of the night, following the exhibition matchup between ‘the best from the East and the best from West’, which the latter won 3-1 via penalties, West Front Road and Festival City had played to a nil-all draw to introduce a night of pulsating Futsal action.
Tiger Bay defeated Wolves of Sophia 2-0 in another exhibition match before a capacity crowd at the venue was thoroughly entertained. Festival City, the real surprise and underdogs throughout the tournament, pocketed $150,000 a trophy and a set of uniforms. (Edison Jefford)
