EBD four-lane expansion moving apace
– Contractors aim at mid-2014 completion

Despite persistent inclement weather, contractors are aiming to complete the East Bank Demerara Public Road four-lane expansion project by mid-2014, says an engineer of the Public Works Ministry.

The official explained that the project has endured several setbacks due to unfavourable weather, relocation of utilities and design modification, moving it further away from the original completion date.
The contracts were signed on October 3, 2011, but physical works began in January 2012. The project was expected to conclude within 18 months but was rescheduled. Within this new deadline there have been noticeable strides within recent months.
According to the engineer, Lot Two, from Covent Garden to Demerara Distillers Limited, which is being executed by GEICO Construction Company in association with General Earth Movers, is the most progressive of the three Lots.
The contractor is now tasked with placing concrete stabilizers over the section which is being transformed from canefields to a carriageway. Currently, works are being executed to build concrete pedestrian foot bridges to link the new roadway to the existing public road.
Minor works on the shoulder of the existing thoroughfare are being done. Significant construction on the public road will not be carried out until the new road is completed. However, if required, the contractor would have to start reconstruction works on the western carriageway.
The engineer related that that would cause traffic congestion, and consideration would be given to night construction, but the Ministry’s ultimate aim is to keep traffic congestion at a minimum.
In addition, excavation works are ongoing to build concrete drains heading to the Diamond “high bridge”. The engineer assured that the presence of a DSL Cash and Carry supermarket will not obstruct construction, since the road would have the same width throughout to Lot Three.

BK International is contracted to expand the roadway in Lot Three, which begins at Diamond “high bridge” and ends at the Housing Scheme entrance. The contractor is currently carrying out excavation works in one area and has taken another section to sub-base level. The design for the high bridge was recently completed.
Dipcon Engineering Services was contracted to construct Lot One, from Providence to Prospect. According to the engineer, the contractor is erecting bridges and culverts along the stretch. At Farm, the contractor has completed erecting a concrete culvert and is working on a complementary culvert at Herstelling. The contractor is currently driving piles to erect a concrete bridge.
