Sit in begins at West Demerara Regional Hospital for better security

Kindly permit me space in your letter column of your newspaper to respond to an article on the above mentioned subject which appeared in Stabroek News on Tuesday April 30, 2013. I have read it with great interest but what concerned me most is the comment by one of the nurses about the system of Security.
“The grounds were not being effectively patrolled and the current system of guards monitoring the area make no sense because they just getting hired and just standing around, “ she wrote.
A maid working at this institution is getting a salary of $42,815 per month for twenty two days work; a Porter is being paid a salary of $47,624 per month for twenty-two days work while a security guard receives a salary of $21,120 for the same twenty two days of work.
On many occasions the security guard not only performs the work of the security guard but he / she has to do the work of the Porter and messenger, to take patient in the hospital and to call the nurses and doctor when the patient arrives.
While Bill f/ 23 of 2012 clearly stated that security guards must be paid a minimum of $140 per hour effective June 1, 2012 guards are still being paid $120 per hour and despite numerous publications of complaints in the newspapers nothing is being done to rectify same for no one in the government, even the opposition who voted in favour of the Bill, even cares. I do hope that some remedial action will be taken by the authorities.
