There’s no doubt that the annual Bartica Easter Regatta is an event that is looked forward to by all and sundry locally and in the Diaspora.
With that in mind, the Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford has sought the expertise of competent organisers to ensure that the event this year leaves an indelible impression of the minds of all that will be a part.

Yesterday at the official launch of the event, which will last for about one-week from March 24, it was announced that D&C Promotions – the Bartica duo of Charles ‘Mice Jones & Deon Ferrier – will partner with the Bartica Regatta Committee to ensure a quality multi faceted spectacle is served up for all to enjoy.
A football competition involving eight teams from the gateway to the interior will kick off on Sunday March 24; a Gospel concert is set for Friday March 29; an International concert will be served up on Saturday March 30 featuring Jamaica’s Jah Cure; the traditional Miss Bartica Pageant makes a grand return after being absent last year and will showcase eight (8) beautiful young ladies selected from around Guyana on March 31; the eagerly anticipated Regatta showcasing the fastest boats on the waterway will be contested over two-days, March 31 and April 1.
Guyana’s world renowned fashion designer Sonia Noel will be in charge of the Miss Regatta Pageant, while A&J Promotions will be in charge of the Power Boat Races.
Regional Chairman Bradford in the feature presentation noted that he was very heartened to be collaborating with D&C Promotions to hold this year’s Regatta activities.
He stated that the Easter Regatta is a vital part of the community which is intertwined into the lives of not only Barticians but Guyana as a whole and in the Diaspora. It is also close linked to tourism.
Regatta he informed was started in the late 50s by two brothers who had owned a forest concession in the lower Essequibo; they started out using paddle boats at the time to race against each other to and from their concession, graduating to engine when they could have afforded it. Some other businessmen joined in and the rest is now history.
“I would like to pay tribute to some persons who have contributed to the success of Regatta, Mr. John Williem, Mr. George Correca (deceased), Oscar Smart, Peter Persaud, Carlos Figero, Mr. Godfrey DeFreitas, the pioneers of organising Regatta.”
There was a lull as regards Regatta activities between 1970 – 1975. Being the visionary he was, former Regional Chairman Mr. Gervy Harry resuscitated the event, putting together a group which included Bradford himself to revive the activity.
Elaborating on D&C Promotions involvement with the organising, Bradford said that he was very pleased to have them back on board and that they bring a professional touch to the overall organizing.
He shared that when he took over for his second term as Regional Chairman in February 2012, he hadn’t much time to plan the event and D&C Promotions stepped up and made the event possible.
While they hadn’t time to organise the traditional Miss Regatta Pageant, they were able to bring off a Gospel Concert using local talent and it was a success to the extent that the community has called for it to be an annual part of the activities and the organisers, have so complied.
D&C Promotions was the group responsible for bringing floodlights T20 cricket to Bartica which saw a number of national players competing and record crowds supporting.
President of the group Charles Jones in brief remarks said that they were happy to be giving back and contributing towards Bartica being seen as the tourist destination.
“The environment is clean, it’s healthy, and the people are friendly and of course a beautiful place to be. We are about standard and quality, the people deserve nothing less.”
Vice President Deon Ferrier who echoed the sentiments of his president said they are looking forward to another successful Regatta.
