Patients are now complaining about the services being offered to them at the Malaria Clinic, located at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals. The disease results from the multiplication of Plasmodium (a sort of bloodsucking) parasites within red blood cells, causing symptoms that typically include fever and headache, in severe cases progressing to coma or death.
Several patients have complained that whenever they visited the clinic for treatment, they have to wait for hours. They also complained about the manner in which the staffers deal with them.
According to a Good Hope, East Coast Demerara woman, she carried her husband to the clinic to get tested for malaria around 07:30 am last Monday but only saw a doctor the following day.
A West Bank Demerara patient, Tory Dick, told this publication that he visited the centre a few times and he observed that persons have to wait a long time for results.
Kaieteur News was told that sometimes one person attends to about 102 patients.
A few persons raised points that the centre needs more staff, only then; everything will be up to date.
A source told Kaieteur News that sometimes over 500 persons would visit the clinic to get tested.
Kaieteur News was told by a clerical worker that most of the persons who visit the clinic for treatment are from the interior location. Hence they are asking for malaria medicine to be distributed in the area.
