GCF one-day rapid tournament
Anthony Drayton /Maria Thomas dominate
Senior Chess player Maria Thomas and National Junior Champion Anthony Drayton continued to dominate their counterparts, winning their respective categories when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged a one-day rapid tournament at the UG Tain Campus, Berbice, Sunday December 9 last.

Thomas amassed 6 points, the same as former national champion, Kriskal Persaud, but benefited from the tie breaker while Drayton was the lone junior player to amass six points. Earlier Persaud had defeated Thomas but suffered a loss to Drayton.
The newly crowned junior champ went on to lose to Thomas. Berbician, Steve Leung distinguished himself among his team mates, placing 3rd among the seniors.
The Demerara players also dominated the junior category with Trenton Bennett of West Demerara Secondary placing second while Davion Mars, formerly of St. Stanislaus College ended third.
Berbician Hemchan Narain of J.C. Secondary School copped the fourth place just in front of Roberto Neto of Demerara.
The scores of the other senior players read: Steve Leung (4), Dane Grimmond (3 ½), and Romesh Narain (3). Juniors: Trenton Bennett (4 ½), Davion Mars, Hemchan Narain, Roberto Neto and Berkley Greene (4 apiece) while nine other junior players accumulated 3 ½ or less. The tournament attracted 19 chess players.
The sponsors were Demerara Distillers Ltd and Berbice representative, Shamal Sugrim, assisted with the presentation of trophies, medals and cash prizes to the top performers.
