Santa came extra early this year for children in several depressed communities throughout the city as they assembled at the Charlotte Street Wesleyan Church for a Christmas treat.
St. Nick came in the form of an overseas based Guyanese, Sister H, who shared out haversacks containing geometry sets and other items.
The children were also fed and the smiles on their faces told the story of how happy they were.
Sister H, who is a representative of the Guyana Christian Charities in Canada, has been doing this for the past 20 years and she plans to continue to help the needy for as long as she can.
According to Sister H, the Guyana Christian Charities is an organization made up of Guyanese living in Canada. She said that the group has been assisting in getting various items packed and shipped to Guyana for the less fortunate.
She has been concentrating mainly on several depressed communities but over the years has fanned out to similar areas outside of Georgetown.
Yesterday, Sister H said that every year she tries to add a new area to her list. This year, Canal No. 1 was the selected community.
“Every year we try to do different things. This year we went into Canal Number One …. We try to at least get 10 children from each of these communities and let them have a good time. We have a bus that collected them and they would stay here for two hours and then go back home,” Sister H said.
The children were selected from Albouystown, Charlotte Street, Tiger Bay and Canal Number One.
Sister H will be back next year and she has some plans for Buxton.
