‘Inspired by Guyana’ exhibition set for National Gallery today
An exhibition ‘Inspired by Guyana’ is set to commence today at the National Arts Gallery, Castellani House, Vlissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, showcasing the fascinating pieces of artist Mayya Lobova.
Lobova, according to a statement issued by the National Gallery, has worked in Guyana over a period of four years.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia to parents who were artists themselves, she earned a degree in African studies before coming to Guyana in 2006. She remained in Guyana initially for a two-year period. Followed by a second two-year period to the present, Lobova, enthused by the Guyanese surroundings, commenced her quest of painting forest animals, large and small plant life, landscapes and symbolic ‘tributes’ to persons and places.

A total of 33 paintings will characterize Lobova’s exhibition which will be featured on the ground floor galleries. The paintings, according to the National Gallery statement, are intended to amplify the artist’s enthusiastic response to the flora, fauna and landscape of Guyana which she discovered for the first time in beginning work as a translator/interpreter stationed in the Berbice River area of Region 10.
Paintings range from a black and yellow series including renderings of the ‘Anaconda and Harpy Eagle’, ‘Armadillos in the Grass’, Fern Trees’ and ‘Forest Floor’, and later paintings in a wider palette including a plumed rooster ‘Calling for Morning’; a tribute to South America, ‘Flowers of the Atacama’; landscape renderings of the Kanuku mountains; and, in a technique of paint applied in dots of colour, views of Kaieteur Falls, the Essequibo forests and Linden (‘On the Way to Linden’), as well as several kinds of animals.
Other works include the dreaming figure ‘The Beautiful Guyana’, and her most recent ‘Jungle Portraits’, of a Jaguar and Eagle, and the Howler and Squirrel Monkeys.
The exhibition is open to the public from today (October 5) and will continue until Saturday October 27.
Admission to the exhibition is free during the gallery hours 10:00 to 17:00 hours Monday through Friday and 14:00 to 18:00 hours on Saturdays. On Thursday October 11th at 17:00 hours Lobova will give a Gallery Talk and Power Point presentation on her work to which the public is cordially invited to attend.
