The man who is on trial in the Berbice High Court on a charge of abduction has changed his plea to guilty.
Shafraz Subratalli is on trial in the Berbice High Court before Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed jury on a charge of abduction committed on December 15, 2009 in Berbice. He reportedly abducted a girl under 16 years of age at Johanna, Black Bush Polder.
The trial which was set to begin last Friday did not get underway because the man’s lawyer, Kim Kyte-John was absent. She was said to have been out of the jurisdiction. The matter was then adjourned to last Tuesday. However, on Tuesday the matter was further adjourned to Thursday after his lawyer Mrs Kim Kyte-John asked for some time to be fully acquainted with the case.
The turn of event came on Thursday when the trial was set to continue. Before the matter began attorney at law Kim Kyte-John informed the court that the accused would like to adopt a certain course of action and change his plea to guilty. This was accepted by the state.
The matter is set for conclusion on Wednesday when prosecutor Attorney at law, Rondell Weaver, is expected to present the state’s case. Attorney at law Kim Kyte John is then expected to present her plea of mitigation.
Justice Bovell Drakes is expected to deliver his verdict after.
A Preliminary Inquiry was conducted by Magistrate Krisendat Persaud and the man was committed to stand trial in the High Court. He has been out on $150,000 bail ever since.
