At least five baggage handlers employed at Timehri are currently in police custody assisting in an investigation into the discovery of a quantity of cocaine at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
According to reports, around 05:30hrs yesterday, the individuals were seen loading bags into a container which was to be placed on board a New York-bound EZjet flight.
However, thanks to good surveillance by ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) as well as a Special Task Force from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the illegal cargo was intercepted. Reports are that five bags were seized, containing a total of four kilogrammes of cocaine.
As a result of quick action, the five persons who worked on the shift were taken into custody.
Meanwhile, according to CANU head James Singh, this recent interception was as a result of collaborative work involving officials of the CJIA, the airline (EZjet) and other law enforcement agencies.
This is the second seizure in recent times. On March 11, last, 10 kilogrammes of cocaine were found in two bags that had been thrown over the airport fence.
