Man appears in court with loaded gun

Kaieteur News understands that Kurt Lewis, a former policeman now providing private security, was stopped earlier this month and later charged with driving a tinted vehicle without the required permit.
He was placed on station bail. The matter was called on March 22 but Lewis failed to appear to answer the charge.
Yesterday Lewis went to the Providence Police Station to uplift the bail money when he was detained on an arrest warrant that was reportedly issued on March 22.
Police at the station immediately took him to the Providence Magistrate’s Court where he initially pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Leslie Sobers.
It was at that point that Lewis also pointed out that he was carrying a loaded 9mm handgun.
This immediately prompted the Magistrate to question whether police had carried out their mandatory search. It is standard procedures for all accused persons to be searched before entering the courts.
Lewis was taken away and the weapon lodged at the station before he appeared again before the Magistrate.
He pleaded guilty and was fined $5,000 for the tint offence.
