Prominent rice miller, Kayman Sankar, is among several others who reportedly owe millions of rates and taxes to the area’s Water Users Association (WUA).
This disclosure was recently made by Lakhan Lall, Chairman of the North End of the Essequibo Coast WUA (New Road to Zorg-en-Vlught).
Lall, in his report to Junior Minister of Agriculture, Alli Baksh who was on a visit to Region Two, disclosed that Sankar, the proprietor of Kayman Sankar Establishment at Hampton Court Village owed $12M to the WUA.
To date, many acres of the rice lands owned by Sankar have been rented out to farmers who are also in default of not paying their rates and taxes.
According to Lall, there were other large farmers who owe the WUA millions.
The WAU comes under the local government body and lends support to farmers, for a fee, to execute the maintenance of dams and trenches.
Additionally, the WUA controls and monitors the water from the main canals and would lend assistance to farmers when they encounter a dry spell.
