The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) will be serving off the Toucan Industries Easter Junior Skill
Level Tournament this Tuesday evening beginning from 18:00hrs, at the Georgetown Club’s squash facility.
The tournament is GSA’s second event of the year following last month’s Bounty Farm Mashramani Handicap tournament which was won by Robert Fernandes.
While that handicap tournament encompassed squash players of all ages and skill levels, the Toucan Industries Easter Junior Skill Level Tournament will be more specific group.
The tournament will be for all squash players or beginners under 19-years-old, as is the custom for this tournament and they will be grouped in categories according to their individual skills. The tournament will be played each night beginning at 18:00hrs to about 21:00hrs and is expected to conclude on Sunday. Junior affairs chairperson of the GSA Tiffany Solomon said that the tournament is the Association’s first step in the process of preparing the junior team for the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Caribbean Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in July this year.
“Well this is really the first junior tournament of the year and its purpose is basically to shortlist the squad, to begin training for the junior national team…” Solomon said.
According to Solomon, competitors will be categorized in about four or five groups according to their skill level and will battle for the divisional titles in the round robin format (each player must face every opponent in the group).
Following the tournament, Solomon said that the GSA shortlists players and begin its usually rigorous preparation for upcoming national and regional encounters. Solomon, who also helps in the coaching department, said that the GSA is fortunate that most of the junior players train all year round. However, what GSA will be inviting the shortlisted players following the tournament, to a structured training environment with specified training hours under the tutorage of elite coach Carl Ince as well as some former national players.
The junior programme is the cornerstone of the GSA and has yielded unprecedented success to Guyana at the regional level by winning the overall title at junior CASA for the last seven years. Their seventh, consecutive title was won in commanding fashion at last year’s tournament which was held on home soil at the Georgetown Club and the National Racquet Centre.
