– after topping GTTA Invitational
By Edison Jefford
Nigel ‘Poster Boy’ Bryan could not let the prospects of winning a whopping $300,000 purse pass him by, especially since he seems to be on top of his game after becoming the youngest player to win a national senior men’s table tennis title last December.
Bryan defeated the emerging Joel Alleyne 11-7, 11-5, 18-16, 7-11, 6-11 and 11-9 to continue his dominance in the absence of senior national players Idi Lewis, Christopher Franklin, Paul David and four-time national champion, Godfrey Munroe.
Alleyne would have only himself to blame for a final that could have been lopsided if he had not gone back to what could have been a winning strategy. He kept going for the explosive forehand drives that were mostly off at critical stages in the title game.
However, every time Alleyne took the pace off the ball, mixed up the spin and played within the context of tactics, he kept winning points. It was that strategy that brought him back in the game after Bryan had taken the first three sets in the best-of-seven final.
Bryan maintained his composure even though Alleyne had won the next two sets to extend a wait for the biggest single purse to ever be handed out in the sport. Alleyne collected $200,000 for his second place finish while Colin France defeated United States-based, Rondell Jordon 13-11, 11-4, 11-8 and 11-9 to secure the $100,000 third place prize Saturday night.
Bryan had defeated France 4-0 while Alleyne similarly thrashed Jordon 4-0 in the semi-finals of the inaugural tournament.
In the women’s competition that was played in a Super Six round-robin format, national women singles champion, Trenace Lowe emerged on top of the group that included second place finisher Chelsea Edghill and the third placed Jody-Ann Blake among Natalie Cummings, Akiecia Nedd and Desiree Lancaster.
Lowe played unbeaten with Edghill’s only loss coming against her with Blake losing to both the two top women in local table tennis, Lowe and Edghill. The US-based Lowe pocket $200,000 for the win while Edghill and Blake got $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Elishaba Johnson won the Pee Wee Handicap contest with Priscilla Greaves finishing second and Jeremy Singh finishing third. Garfield Wiltshire defeated Remy Tait 10-12, 12-10, 11-8 and 11-7 to win the Masters’ 40-50 category while France beat Raynor ‘Copter’ Anderson 8-11, 11-3, 11-4, 8-11 and 11-4 to win the Over 50 Masters’ category.
