Vlissengen Road accident was due to careless road use – driver
Monday’s accident involving a motorbike and a Hilux pickup on Irving Street,
Selwyn Lyght assisting his brother after the accident Monday.
Georgetown could have been avoided if the motorcyclist had obeyed the most basic of traffic rules—do not undertake—pass on the inside of a vehicle.
Around 15:20 hours on Monday last, two Kitty brothers were dragged from the canal that separates Irving Street from Vlissengen Road in the city after they struck the pickup and “ended up in the canal.
The brothers, Selwyn Lyght, 31, and Rollin Edwards, 33, were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where they were treated.
Kaieteur News was told that Lyght, who was riding the motorcycle without license, was proceeding north along Irving Street, on his way to Kitty. The Toyota Hilux pickup was also heading along Irving Street.
The driver, Gilles Balthod, said that he had just collected his daughter from a Church Street school and was heading home. He said that after turning from Church Street he crossed over to the right lane because he had to turn right to access Vlissengen Road.
He said that as he approached the bridge the motorcycle came speeding on the inside and as he was turning, the cycle collided with the side of the vehicle and continued into the canal, taking the two cyclists with it.
Balthod said that at the scene he demanded a breathalyzer test. He said that he repeated his request at the police station. None was given. He added that the brothers have since come to agreement of settling the matter. He said that they have acknowledged that they were wrong.
They met again yesterday and indicated to the police that they did not intend to have the matter proceeded with, and for good reason.
Balthod said that he was disappointed that the press would carry an incorrect report of the accident. He felt that the least the reporter could have done was talk to the police if the eyewitnesses were reluctant to offer any comments.
