Dear Sir,
Editor, upon reading an article published in your newspaper captioned ‘’Alpha United withdraws from GFA’’-16.02.12, my mind, which philosophically’’ is the most important instrument possessed by the spirit’’, immediately focused upon one of the wise old sayings. And the only one that was befitting, “come see me and come live with me is two different things’’!
As a consequence, I remain the least of all persons who wasn’t surprised that Alpha “The Hammer’’ United would have withdrawn from the GFA.
Alpha’s President, MP Odinga Lumumba first and foremost is a businessman/promoter and politician, and definitely not is any fool, despite his public ranting and ravings, from a business perspective to forego becoming the franchise holder of semi professional football in Guyana? Additionally, losing out on a chance of defending one’s title as the National League 2 times as champions?
With this factor being taken into serious consideration Alpha would lose out on playing in the inter-Guiana’s club championship, along with the CFU/CONCACAF Club championship! Can Alpha/Lumumba afford this?
Absolutely not, since it would have effects on the senior players, some of whom are in the twilight of their careers!
Finally the political perspective! With a master’s stroke from the brush of a professional artist Lumumba clearly outlined, ‘The executive of Alpha United Football Club has decided to withdraw the club from participating in any activity organised by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) until a settlement is made between the GFA and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)’.
Surprisingly, this latest development comes against the backdrop that both the GFA and GFF, previously held talks with the Hon. Minister of Culture, Youth & Sports, hopefully I presume of meditation, but why not the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) which apart from being more neutral, would have had no political input/favourtism?
Nevertheless at the end of the day Lumumba can utilize his political clout to mobilize the necessary financing towards influencing a few clubs to part company with the GFA, more so when the Hon Asst: Sec/Treasurer of the GFA would have to resign due to the individual also being an Executive of Alpha United.
And Clubs would be duly informed of the failure of the GFA’s executive to fulfill the General Council’s mandate of brokering a meeting between the lawyers of the GFA and the GFF, which in essence can be construed as misconduct! Come see me, come live with me is two different things.
Lester Sealey.
