– GoG/GCB impasse causing Guyanese fans to lose out
The list of international cricket matches which Guyana has lost this season has increased. The India A team is scheduled to tour the Caribbean in May and June this year and the West Indies Cricket Board had carded matches for the Guyana National Stadium.
A WICB source yesterday confirmed that the matches have now been moved to other Caribbean countries and Guyana will once again lose out.
The source confirmed that Guyana was in fact initially identified to host matches on the Indian A tour when they will take on West Indies A in a series including four day ‘Tests’, 50 over and Twenty20 matches.
The WICB official revealed that given the ongoing imbroglio between the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Cricket Board it could not host matches in Guyana any longer and was forced to change venues.
The Government of Guyana and the GCB are at loggerheads over the running of cricket in Guyana. The GoG is seeking to have the Ministry of Sport formed Interim Management Committee headed by Clive Lloyd to take over the management of cricket in the country. This action has been met with strong resistance from the GCB, the regional governing body WICB and the international governing body – the International Cricket Council.
Guyana has already lost four rounds of WICB Regional 4 Day matches and a West Indies v Australia Test match which was scheduled for April 23rd to 27th.
That Test will now be played at Windsor Park in Dominica. Guyana has played they first round 4 Day match at Windsor Park and their second round match against the Windward Islands commences today at the same venue.
The national team will then travel to St Kitts and Antigua to play their third and fourth round matches respectively.
In recent years the WICB has had to move a number of international matches for various reasons.
The WICB was forced to move a 2009 England v West Indies Test from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to the Antigua Recreation Grounds in Antigua. The SVRS outfield was found to be unfit for international cricket after just a few deliveries were bowled in the game.
In 2010 matches scheduled for Sabina Park were moved to Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad as a result of the Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke security situation in Jamaica at the time.
In January this year the WICB moved the preliminary round of the Caribbean Twenty20 Tournament from Trinidad to Antigua after the regional body could not find agreement on terms of hosting with the Queen’s Park Oval.
