…reports to authorities but gets no action
Linden residents are calling on the Minister of Home Affairs, the Police Office of Professional Responsibility, and the Commissioner of Police to investigate policemen who were in a vehicle (Hilux 4×4) PLL 1301 and shot at two persons in a car.
According to the driver of the vehicle, Dwayne Trotman, on January 9, 2012, he attended a funeral in Linden. After the procession, he and some relatives were hanging out until midnight, when he went in search for something to eat “at the waterfront in the mining town.”
Trotman explained that while in Silver City, Wismar, he stopped at a Chinese restaurant and bought something for himself and his female companion. Some of his cousins, including Lewis Robinson, and other relatives were also at the shop.
“Then a man come up to me and ask me for a hundred dollars. I tell him that he should order the food and I will put the rest. He then said ‘don’t worry’ he wasn’t going to buy the food. Then I push my hand in my pocket and try to separate the money without pulling out all. He end up seeing the money and I give he the hundred and he say ‘thanks’ and he walk away.”
Trotman explained that the same man returned to the area with a ‘red Jailing scrambler and “parked the bike in front of my car. His bike number was CF 8776. I observed the movements and I found it strange that this same man just asked me for $100.”
Adding that he did not request the man to remove his bike although the man was still on the motorcycle, Trotman said he reversed his vehicle, turned around, and headed down Blueberry Hill to drop home the female companion.
Trotman said at the end of the hill, he noticed a bright light in the middle of the road and out of caution decided to flick his headlamps to determine if the vehicle was stalled on the road or if the driver was inattentive, thus stalling traffic.
“All the vehicle lights were on and I keep flashing and the vehicle won’t even respond, and it was a challenge on both sides to pass the vehicle because it blocked off the road.”
He said that his suspicions got the better of him however. Trotman said he turned his vehicle around and headed in the opposite direction.
“Now imagine this; the vehicle started to come behind me after I turned around. Then I reach back to the restaurant and the guy that I gave the $100 to on the bike ride out in front of me and block my path. When I move to the right the bike move to the right and is the same thing when I move to the left. Then I give he a fake and pull to the right and get away through the left, and right away I know was a robbery.”
Trotman said that after he sped away, he later slowed down and realized that the vehicle was still tracing him. As it approached closer, gunshots rang out and Trotman panicked. He did not know the area very well as he was uncertain which route to take since he did not want to be cornered.
“I just decided to take another street and head back to the Chinese shop, and when I holler bandit coming I see three policemen come out of a vehicle, two had big guns and the other had a pistol. When I see is police I feel a little relief, and then I ask them why they firing shots behind me. They (police) telling me I nearly knock down a man by the waterfront just now. All my cousins, my family and strangers was at the Chinese shop and everyone know that was not so and they give statements and could testify,” Trotman said.
One of Trotman’s relatives who was present at the scene confirmed what had transpired on January 9. He however, noted that the police were very unprofessional and even did not take statements.
“Imagine strangers that were present said the police wanted to rob the man!” Lewis Robinson said.
He noted that they both visited Brickdam Police Station when they returned to the city and made a report and gave a statement. Then they went to the Office of Professional Responsibility. Since then nothing significant has come out of the matter.
“They could have killed us and who would have said sorry or apologized?” Trotman asked.
Yesterday, the Linden Police Station was contacted but nothing was forthcoming. The Divisional Commander promised an investigation.
