– but residents cry victimisation after arrests
Several residents of Westminster are crying victimisation after an early morning police raid yesterday led to several homes being searched and the arrest of at least two men.
Westminster Phase Two, one of the number of new housing schemes bordering La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, has become a hotspot for burglaries and robberies in recent months and police and residents alike suspect that many stolen items are either being fenced or stored there. Around 05:00hrs, two vehicle-loads of armed police descended into the area. Residents claimed that at least one of the ranks was reeking of alcohol. According to Susan Jaigoo, 45, she heard a knocking on the door. She was at home in the wooden building with her 19-year-old daughter, Amanda.
“Meh husband Rawl just left home. I ask is who and somebody seh is police and for me to open.” Jaigoo said that she then heard her husband’s voice and he too told her to open the door. “It look like he get beat up and he eyes red like he was crying.”
The woman said the ranks entered her home, made checks and then demanded to see a receipt for her television.
“Ah told them the TV buy from a store in Regent Street. “They grab the TV with all de wires and walk out de house with it.”
According to the woman, the incident was a shocking one that never happened before. Next door, the tiny home of Marciana Douglas was also searched. She was at home with her five-year-old and her baby.
“They search de house and under the table. Dem ask me who the bicycle belong to and they ask me for meh husband. He does work at Hibiscus Restaurant. Dem tell me they coming back for he.” Several homes were also searched including that of an angry Ann Davis who lives behind the Jaigoo family. Jaigoo and a number of men were taken away. “This is not right. They targeting the poor people who wukking hard and don’t be involved in wrong things,” another resident angrily said.
Residents claimed that indeed the area has been dogged by accusations. “But is dem young boys from up in front that doing these things. We don’t thief and we don’t buy thiefing things.” The residents were preparing to visit the La Grange Police Station at the time of the visit by Kaieteur News.
