Chief of Staff Gary Best says that he believes that the Guyana Defence Force, had an excellent year in 2011. Commodore Best made this comment at the Annual Cadets Day, which was held at Camp Sipu, Base Camp Stephenson on Sunday.
According to Commodore Best, the hallmark of 2011 was the hosting of the National and Regional General Elections. He said that the military received support from the police which in all made the event a peaceful one. In the run up to elections the Commodore said that there was superb planning at the joint services level, adding that he was with the tasks that were given to them.
Moreover, Commodore Best, in trying to address the issue of females in the military he made a resounding call for more of them to join this noble and disciplined profession. He explained that it’s a contract between the force and the nation.
He noted that on the last Officer’s course women were in the programme, but this year there was none. According to the Chief of Staff, they have no problem with women being in the force; in fact they have always embraced and encouraged it.
Best urged civil society and the countless women’s groups in Guyana to help motivate more females to join the army. He said that Guyana has had the first set of women officers in the region and world. The Chief of Staff could not give a definite answer as to why the army has fewer females. He explained that the women in the military are for combat support. Best said that they are not on the frontlines.
He posited a woman can enjoy a very rewarding career once she enlists in the army. “There are rewarding careers in the army; the women have an opportunity to become doctors and much more” Best told the media.
Bilateral Relations
The Chief of Staff said that he wants to consolidate Guyana’s bilateral relations which have been useful to the GDF. He said that the partners have been useful to Guyana, those were Brazil, USA, Venezuela and China.
He added that much training was done with them. However, Best said that he has eyes on opening bilateral relations with India and Czechoslovakia based upon the government’s diplomatic cover.
According to him, this would be a great support for the army. He explained that the support would be primarily on training opportunities which are the most important aspects of the bilateral relations. Secondly it’s for material support to the military that is non lethal support to the military.
