A Corentyne labourer perished in an early morning blaze yesterday. Dead is Hemadat Phurkokatam, 42, of Springlands, Corriverton.
The man, who was the sole occupant of the building, was apparently asleep when the blaze began. According to reports out of the area, neighbours were aroused by the thick blanket of smoke emerging from the building and quickly summoned the ranks at the Corriverton Fire Station.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, much of the building had already been destroyed, with the labourer inside.
Residents said that the man must have been sleeping when he was consumed by the flames. Police later discovered the charred remains on the scene.
