Four men narrowly escaped drowning on Thursday after a boat powered by a 200 horsepower engine toppled over in the Essequibo River during a squall.
The boat which is the property of the Region Two Administration, was heading from the wharf at Parika to Supernaam, before finally making its way to the compound of the Region Two Administration, in Anna Regina.
Reports further indicate that while Captain, Shemroy Stoby was in the vicinity of Suddie he was caught in a squall, which caused the boat to overturn with its occupants.
They were subsequently rescued by one of the crew members, Shawn Norton, who had made it to shore. Norton risked his life by relieving himself of his clothing and giving it to the men to hold unto as a means of support.
One of the occupants, Regional Transport Officer Jagnarine had to be hauled from the overturned boat.
Jagnarine was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital in an unconscious state but is now said to be recuperating slowly.
