Hewley Robinson and Prince Slowe, the two boxers accused of conspiring with each other to defraud the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) while deceiving the boxing public, were hauled before a disciplinary committee, found guilty and fined 80% of their contracted fees while their boxing licenses have been suspended for a period of three months.
The two bantamweight boxers appeared on the 19th edition of the Guyana Fight Night boxing card on Saturday, December 17 last in a scheduled 4 rounds affair. Instead of boxing in earnest, the two adopted tentative approaches while refusing to engage in meaningful combat. Their attitude elicited two stern reprimands from referee Dexter Torrington and when they continued in that vein, were both disqualified.
They were subsequently ordered to appear before the disciplinary committee on Monday last. Both fighters were found guilty of conspiring with each other in an attempt to defraud the GBBC, deceiving the boxing public, and for knowingly indulging in unsportsmanlike behaviour.
President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool disclosed that such behaviour undermines the work of his executives in their bid to promote the sport while providing meaningful activities for the local pugilists.
He said that there appeared to be some level of collusion between the two fighters forcing the GBBC to view the matter seriously. The GBBC boss hopes that the punishment meted out to the errant boxers serves as a warning to those wishing to engage in similar practices.
Consequently, the executive of the GBBC wishes to apologize to the boxing public and to its many supporters for the charade while assuring that there will be no repetition. Robinson has compiled some 4 professional fights to date, while Slowe was making his debut after a somewhat checkered amateur career.
