Dear Editor,
I am a chief officer attached to the Guyana Prison Service. Even though it is against the prison regulations Chapter 11:01 for me to communicate with the media, I feel compelled to do so.
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the excellent work Mr. Kenneth Sydney, an inmate of the Georgetown Prison, is doing for the prison. If any information is correct Mr. Kenneth Sydney is a 63- year-old Guyanese who is a naturalized US citizen who is serving 15 years for manslaughter. He has been in prison for the past eight years.
The prison records and my personal observation reflects Mr. Sydney to be a first offender and his conduct in the prison over the years is excellent.
He is a qualified electrical engineer who has been doing electrical work on most of the prisons saving the Government millions of dollars in repairs. He has also been teaching other inmates electrical installation. I recently spoke to Sydney and he told me “Chief when I am released from prison I would like to return voluntarily to continue to teach inmates.”
I was touched by the sincerity of Sydney’s expression and his desire to contribute to the rehab of fellow inmates.
In closing I say without fear or affection that Kenneth Sydney is one of the very few inmates who have impressed me to this extent in my 25 years of service in the prison. In this view I officially petition the President of Guyana to pardon this inmate and set him free for the Christmas or to the Honorable Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Clement Rohee, I say give Mr. Sydney some kind of amnesty or massive remission of sentence.
Chief Officer
