Dear Editor,
After 19 years of difficult marriage, imagine one spouse saying to the other – Please don’t leave me. I know I treated you badly but I intend to change. Just give me another five years of your life and see the difference. I will put more food on the table, look after the children better, clean the yard on a regular basis, make sure the drains are kept clear during the rainy season, deal with the regular blackouts, get more dogs and more grillwork to stop thieves from entering the house, find a way to pay for medicines and the spectacles the children need and treatment for Granny too. In fact I intend to get a job and stop liming with the boys, getting drunk and behaving bad. I want you to please overlook the fact that in the last 19 years I achieved none of these simple things.
Trust me, the next five will be different. All I ask is that you take me back. I know I said more or less the same sweet things five years ago and the five years before that and you took a chance on me both times.
I didn’t perform because I couldn’t perform. What I mean is that I was just too busy looking after the boys and getting myself geared up. I always had you and the children in mind but I just never got around to showing you how much I cared. I’m asking you to please give me another chance. This time it will be different. Though I will still look after a few of the boys, I promise you it will be a different group of boys, new boys, and I won’t ‘overdo the do’. After all, I know that you will stick by me-through thick and thin and I’m asking you to give me this break.
If you care about yourself and family your response would be simple … “Sorry, but boat gone ah falls. I done deh wid APNU.”
