In a scene that came straight out of a Western movie, a rice farmer blasted a man with his shotgun, fatally wounding him, in the Cotton Tree backlands.
Dead is 27-year-old Ramzan Ally of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, whose body was recovered with a 9mm pistol lying next to it.
Police say they are investigating the incident which occurred around 16:30 hours on Sunday.
According to the police the rice-farmer who is a licenced firearm holder was proceeding into the Cotton Tree Backdam in a motor vehicle, when he was allegedly confronted by Ally, who was on horseback and was armed with a handgun.
Ally, the police said, threatened to kill the rice farmer.
During the confrontation, the rice farmer discharged a round from his shotgun which struck Ramzan Ally to his upper body.
The man then drove away and reported the matter to the police.
Ally’s body was subsequently found on a dam in the Cotton Tree Backdam with the 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol with two rounds nearby.
The licenced firearm holder is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
