Demerara lose final by 6 wkts despite Chanderpaul’s 53
Man-of-the-Match Shailendra Shameer spurred Berbice to a six-wicket win against Demerara in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) under-17 Inter-County Cricket final at DCC yesterday.
Shameer top scored with a 52-ball 53 with four fours and three sixes as Berbice made 170-5 in 46.2 overs replying to Demerara’s 167 all out after Shameer had taken 2-27 to set the Berbicians on course for victory.
Sharaz Ramcharron lashed an unbeaten 22 for Berbice after joining forces with Shameer who concluded the game with a boundary. Shimron Hetymer (23) and Nick Ramsaroop (19), Quacy McPherson (17) and Arif Chan (16) were the other Berbicians to pass 15.
Pavindralall Persaud took 3-26, while Guyana under-15 leg-spinner Steven Sankar took the other wicket to fall to bowlers. Earlier, Demerara were led by 53 from Guyana youth left-hander Tagenarine Chanderpaul and an unbeaten 38 from national youth pacer Dexter George after Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies Test batsman Shiv Chanderpaul, added 31 for the first wicket with Martin Bell (11).
Chanderpaul hit four fours and a six in his innings after his half century came in 97 balls and 140 minutes before he fell to Shameer to leave Demerara on 118-6 with 8.2 overs remaining.
Michael Shalim (18) was leg before to national under-19 left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai (2-40), while George faced just 33 balls and clobbered three powerful sixes and a four in his 38 before Benard Bailey (1) was run out off the last ball of the innings.
