E’bo man found dead in Stanleytown canal
– Left for interior location two months ago
Relatives of a man from Dartmouth on the Essequibo Coast are calling for a thorough investigation into his death after he was found floating in a trench in Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara.
According to reports, 20-year-old Donnie Ray Edwards’ body was found around noon on Monday. Persons who saw the man’s remains said he had an injury to his head. The discovery was made by passersby. It was not clear how the man met his demise or for how long he was missing.
Meanwhile, the man’s stepmother, Samantha Thomas, told this publication that she last saw Edwards on August 19 at their Dartmouth, Essequibo home. The woman related that he left saying that he was going into the interior to work. She said she never saw or heard from him since.
“Yesterday (Monday) my other son call and tell me that Donnie Ray dead, so I ask him how he dead, if is when he de coming out the bush he dead, and me son tell me now that they find he in a trench on the West Bank.”
The woman said she was confused as to how the young man got to the West Bank of Demerara since as far as she knows he does not know anyone from that area. Thomas said she made some enquires and was later told that Edwards had befriended a young woman from the area and was staying there, while telling his relatives that he was in the interior. Later in the day, the woman said, Edwards’ grandmother contacted her and asked her to travel to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour to identify the body.
Yesterday when the woman visited the Parlour she said her worst fears were confirmed.
“Since August I didn’t see this boy and I thought he was somewhere in Buckhall working… and this is where I come and see him, back in a parlour.”
Samantha Thomas said she wants answers and for the matter to be investigated.
A post mortem is expected to be conducted on the man’s remains today. The matter has been reported and investigations are ongoing.
