Reduction of AIDS-related deaths in Guyana per year
In 2008, AIDS-related deaths were among the top 10 causes of deaths in Guyana, according to the Ministry of Health’s 2008 Statistical Bulletin.
AIDS-related deaths ranked fifth among the killers in 2006 and moved to number six at the end of 2008.
In 2002 there were 475 AIDS-related deaths recorded in Guyana while 2003 and 2004 saw decreases to 399 deaths and 356 deaths respectively.
In 2005 there were 360 such deaths. They year 2006 saw a drop to 298 in AIDS-related deaths.
For the years 2007 and 2008 there were 289 and 239 such deaths while 2009 saw an impressive reduction to 192 AIDS-related deaths.
Currently the records for 2010 are unavailable; however, if the trend continues there is an expected decrease for the year in question.
Meanwhile, a major achievement in the national HIV/AIDS prevention programme has been the development and launching of the Guyana National Prevention Principles, Standard and Guidelines in March of 2010.
This document serves as a tool to assist prevention practitioners in rating their prevention strategies.
In order to ensure full application and further ‘nationwide rollout’ of the document, a cadre of key persons (35 in number) in both governmental and non-governmental agencies was selected to be trained as trainers and facilitators in the use of the prevention tool.
