Resident puts out fire at Sophia Primary School
Residents of ‘A’ Field Sophia on Sunday evening last averted what could have been a major disaster after fire broke out at the Sophia Primary School.
According to reports, the fire was seen coming from one of the classrooms located in the bottom flat of the building shortly after 20:00 hours.
A security guard attached to the school said that she was in the guard hut at the front of the building waiting to be relieved when a man who lived across the road alerted her about the fire.
A section of the class room and some burnt furniture at the Sophia Primary School.
“I was sitting in the hut and this man run over to me and say you deh here sitting down and the school on fire.”
The woman said that she immediately ran to the section of the building from which fire was coming to see if it was indeed the building was burning.
“I thought was a joke the man making because I say it must be garbage burning,”
According to the woman once she confirmed that the building was on fire she summoned the Guyana Fire Service as well as the police.
The guard said that residents came out in their numbers to help put out the fire.
“Within minutes people come running over with buckets and everything possible that could hold water and one man kick open the door so that they can out the fire,”.
She explained that the fire started in a classroom which was locked from the outside. By the time the fire tender arrived the blaze was under control. Fortunately, only a few pieces of furniture were burnt and a wall in the class room was scorched.
Sources close to the investigation said that their initial investigation suggests that the fire may have been the work of an arsonist.
The incident did not cause any disruption of classes at the school.

It goes to show that a group of desperate goons are trying to deny the people of what has been kindly provided to them by the government of the day. Selfish people will stop at nothing; not even the future of our own children. They will do ANYTHING to achieve their goals. Terrorrism in Guyana! Nothing short of it.
