Police look to retain Joint Services Athletics title next month
The competitive rivalry between the Guyana Police and Defence Forces continues at the Annual Joint Service Athletic Sports at the Guyana Defence Force ground from October 2-7.
The last athletics sports, which saw Defence Force Quince Clarke, winning in the 100m in 10.4 seconds and his counterpart Rupert Perry, second in 10.5 and Police Winston George third in 10.7, will be very competitive this year with up-sets expected.
Guyana Police Force coach, Lyndon Wilson told Kaieteur Sport in an interview at the Police Training School, that this year’s 100m will be really ‘beefed up with surprises’, despite the Defence Force dominance in the sprint.
“The expectation at the sports is very high but I will not jump the gun to determine who will be the winner of the 100m, however the competition in the 100m will be really beefed up as George is not the only athlete from Police that should be watched as there are other athletes of which I will not disclose,” Wilson said.
Wilson further noted that they are looking on both sides of the coin as George is nursing a minor injury presently and will be representing Guyana at the Pan Am Senior Games in a few weeks.
As a result of that they are still deciding on whether George will be participating in the sprint doubles or triples at the games next week.
The Police coach declared that they ruled the female category last year and this year will not be different as they have a new breed of female athletes in the force.
“We dominated last year and this year we will not be taking the Defence Force light because they have female athletes that can spring surprises…our same group of females from the previous Joint Service Sport is not here this year and I know the Army will come hard as they are planning for us but they are in for some surprises,” he said.
Wilson added that they will be capitalizing on all of the areas especially the weak ones.
Meanwhile, the Defence Force Coach, Robert Chisholm was positive that his team will steal the Joint Service title from Police, “…the preparation for the games are coming very nice, I love it and I know we will win,” he said.
He notified that Perry along with Clarke and Jermaine Newtown will be running the sprint doubles at the games.
According to Chisholm, the females are not in shape as the males, but will be on target by next week for the event.
The Defence coach significantly revealed to Kaieteur Sport that Police strong areas are the field events and it will be much more competitive this year in the field events as records will be broken. “…we have stepped our game up in the field events and in order for Police to win again, they will have to be breaking a lot of records,” he boldly said.
The last Joint Service Sports, Police amassed 616 points to re-arrest their title, while the Defence Force merely managed 414 points taking the runner-up position ahead of Guyana Fire Service who finished third with 140 points.
The Annual Joint Service Athletic Sports will commence on October 2 with a 10k mixed road race relay with four males and one female on a team. (Juanita Hooper)
