– takes top honours in final preliminary round
Just as they had done over the period of the tournament so far, West Demerara’s Young Achievers dominated the latest format in the annual Tradewind Tankers Volleyball Competition which was played recently, at the GTM Hardcourts in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Playing in the two’s format, Achievers ‘A’ defeated all and sundry to end the day at the top of the podium and to go into the final four as the team with the highest aggregate points.
After the preliminary rounds – the total points and ranking for the final four are as follows: Achievers 473, GuySuCo Training School (GTS) 447, Jaguars 1 – 429 and Castrol Strikers in the cellar on 384.
In the final leg of the preliminary rounds each of the six teams that remained in the tournament was required to field two teams with games being played in two zones- ‘A’ and ‘B’ where the top two finishers of each group advanced to the semi finals and subsequent final.
Of the six teams, Lusignan failed to show.

Achievers ‘A’ ended on a total of 80 points followed by GTS 75, Jaguars ‘1’ on 66 Jaguars ‘2’ with 55 and Castrol Strikers at the bottom on 42.
Zone B
Jaguars ‘1’ topped with 73, Achievers 72, Castrol 68, GTS 67, and Jaguars ‘2’ – 47.
In the semi-finals, GTS beat Jaguars ‘1’ 21-18, while Achievers ‘B’ handed a walkover to their ‘A’ team which set up a clash between the two survivors.
In the final, Achievers prevailed 21-17 over GTS to cart off the top prize of $10,000, while GTS was presented with $5,000
Achievers won the second phase $20,000 – which was given to the winner of the two’s and fours’.
Second place went to GTS and they received $10,000
The tournament now moves into the semi-finals and final and these were scheduled to be played, at the Sports Hall on the 3rd and 10th respectively.
However, the organisers have been informed that due to repairs being done to the facility these dates were no longer available.
They are, however, waiting for word on the availability of the facility for the completion of the tournament.
