The Guyana Defence Force rank, who was involved in a fracas with local announcer Nerissa Pearson a few weeks ago, was yesterday charged with two counts of assault when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
Second Lieutenant Denzil Mingo is accused of assaulting Nerissa Pearson and Donella Broodie, on June 19, 2011. To the charge he pleaded not guilty. He was represented by attorney at law Paul Fung-a- Fat.
The lawyer in a bail application stated that his client poses no risk of flight, and has a fixed place of abode.
He said that the mere fact that his client is just 19 years old and is a lieutenant in the army shows that he has a promising future.
There was no objection to bail by Police Prosecutor Steven Telford. However the prosecutor sought to bring to the court’s attention that more charges are expected to be instituted against Mingo.
The magistrate asked how soon that would be and according to Telford it could be as soon as today.
Mingo was subsequently placed on $10,000 bail for each count of assault. He is expected to return to court next month.
This newspaper understands that Mingo was involved in a physical altercation with several police ranks on Friday night. The incident happened at a popular Hadfield and John Streets restaurant.
